Soccer Without Boundaries is changing lives
The charitable organization Soccer Without Boundaries is changing lives through sport. This soccer program for refugee and low-income uses sport to break down barriers and make children feel that they belong in their community and in Calgary. The program was started by Jean-Claude Munyezamu is 2010. Jean-Claude escaped from Rwanda just months before the 1994 genocide and has worked as an aid volunteer in refugee camps in Somalia and Sudan, before moving to start a family. He brought the soccer program that he created in the refugee camps to Calgary. Jean-Claude’s story is told by Giller-prize winning author Will Ferguson, in his book, Road Trip to Rwanda. He was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for his work helping newcomers integrate into their communities. Metro News dubbed Jean-Claude a Calgary hero in their April 2016 article. In April 2016, Soccer Without Boundaries was awarded a $10,000 Soul of the City grant, voted by the community and provided by the Calgary Foundation, Calgary Economic Development, and RBC Foundation. This grant will help fund the cost of a one-week 2016 summer soccer camp. Read more about Jean-Claude.
“Children can understand soccer even if they don’t understand the local language and culture. They know the basic rules of the games and they soon start to learn, or re-learn, structure, authority and consequences. Most of the time kids from refugee camps don’t like rules, but they respect soccer rules.”
Jean-Claude Munyezamu, 2016
Soccer is a universal language
After thousands of hours of volunteer time, the organization now needs to establish a formal structure and properly fund the annual summer camps and year round weekly soccer programs with the goal of expanding into more communities. We are asking for your generous support and sponsorship of Soccer Without Boundaries. Charitable receipts are issued for all donations over $20.
“Every child deserves to feel safe from harm, to have fun, to feel that they belong, and to start their new life on a level playing field.”
Jean-Claude Munyezamu, 2016
On-going sponsorship opportunities
Currently we offer weekly Saturday soccer in two communities in Calgary. Over 100 children participate in the two locations, Glenbrook (SW) and Vista Heights (NE). Professional coaches and trainers along with volunteers provide instruction and structure for any child who wants to participate. Post-practice snacks and drinks are provided.
This supports one child for a full week of camp, including coaching, lunch and snacks, other related activities, take home t-shirt, and overhead costs (administration, insurance, etc.)
Any donation amount is welcome!
Van to transport children and gear: $40,000
Most newcomers do not have a vehicle and parents are not able to travel with children on the bus, and may be nervous about sending children on their own on the bus when the children do not speak English. The van will allow volunteers to pick up children, who otherwise would not be able to attend, and take them to soccer. The van is essential to transport soccer balls, nets, shoes, water and snacks.
One-week 2016 August camp in NE Calgary: $17,000
